Accessibility statement

How usable this service is, what we know is not yet good enough, and how to tell us when we are wrong.

To be completed before launch. This statement is honest about the software as built. NEIIA must add the address for accessibility complaints and the date of the last independent audit, which has not yet been commissioned.

What we are aiming at

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA. That is the standard a public service should be held to, and we state where we fall short rather than claiming conformance we have not had tested.

What should work

  • Every page can be operated by keyboard alone. The first tab stop skips to the main content, and focus is visible on a three pixel outline in both appearances.
  • Text can be resized to 200 per cent without loss of content, and pinch zoom is not disabled.
  • Colour is never the only carrier of meaning: statuses are labelled as well as coloured, and sortable columns announce their state.
  • Forms name their errors at the top of the page and link each one to the field it belongs to, as well as marking the field itself.
  • A dark appearance is available and is remembered between visits.
  • Tables that are wider than the screen scroll inside themselves rather than pushing the page sideways.

What we know is not good enough

  • No independent audit has been carried out. Everything on this page is our own assessment.
  • Documents uploaded by third parties are not checked for accessibility. A PDF supplied by an organisation may not be readable by assistive technology, and we do not currently remediate them.
  • No translation. The service is available in English only, which is a real barrier in a country with many first languages.
  • Screen reader testing has been limited. We have tested with the keyboard and with automated checks, not yet with a range of assistive technologies and real users.

Telling us we are wrong

If you cannot use part of this service, we want to hear it, and a report of a barrier is treated as a defect rather than as feedback. Use the contact route published by NEIIA. We will acknowledge and say what we intend to do about it.
